ವಿಮರ್ಶೆ ಬರೆದವರು ಸುಚೇತಾ ಕೆ ನಾರಾಯಣ್
ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಅಮೇರಿಕಾದ ದಟ್ಟ ಅಬೇಧ್ಯ ಅಮೆಜಾನ್ಕಾಡುಗಳ ಜೊತೆ ಹೊಂದಿಕೊಂಡೇ ಇರುವ ಪುಟ್ಟ ದೇಶ ಪೆರು. ಇವತ್ತಿಗೂ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಜನ-ಜೀವನ ನಮಗೆ ಚಿರಪರಿಚಿತವೇನಲ್ಲ. ಅಮೇರಿಕಾ, ಯುರೋಪ್ ದೇಶಗಳ ಪ್ರವಾಸ ಕಥನ ಅವೆಷ್ಟಿವೆಯೋ! ಆದರೆ ಪೆರುವಿನಂತಹ ದೇಶದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕೇಳಿ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಜನರು ಅದೆಲ್ಲಿದೆ ಎಂದೇ ಕೇಳಿಯಾರು.
“ಪೆರುವಿನ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಕಣಿವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ” ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಕೈಗೆತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡರೆ ಸಾಕು, ಆ ದೇಶದ ಪರಿಚಯವಾಗತೊಡಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಲೇಖಕಿ ನೇಮಿಚಂದ್ರರವರಿಗೆ ಆ ದೇಶವನ್ನೇಕೆ ನೋಡಬೇಕಿನಿಸಿತೋ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಂತೂ ಹಾಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಗಳಿಕೆಯನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ವ್ಯಯಿಸಿ ಹೊರಟ ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರವಾಸದ ರೋಚಕ ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ದಾಖಲಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹೋಗುವ ಮೊದಲಿನ ಅವರ ತಯ್ಯಾರಿ, ವೀಸಾಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಪರದಾಟ, ಯಾವುದೋ ಕಂಡರಿಯದ ದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುವಾಗಿನ ಮನಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಪದರ ಪದರವಾಗಿ ನಮ್ಮೆದುರು ಹರಡಿಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಪ್ರವಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಜೊತೆಯಾಗುವ ಮಾಲತಿ ಎಂಬುವವರು ಲೇಖಕಿ ನೇಮಿಚಂದ್ರರಿಗೆ “ನನಗೆ ಅನಕೊಂಡ ಹಾವನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟಲು ಅವಕಾಶ ಸಿಗುತ್ತಾದರೆ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ” ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಅವರ ಪ್ರಯಾಣದ ಸಿದ್ಧತೆ.
ಮುಂದೆ ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ತೆರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಪೆರುವಿನ ಒಂದೊಂದೇ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು. ಹಾವಿನಂತೆ ಹರಿಯುವ ಉರುಬಂಬಾ ನದಿ, ವಿಶ್ವವಿಖ್ಯಾತ ಮಚ್ಚುಪಿಚ್ಚು, ಅದನ್ನು ಪ್ರಪಂಚಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರೆದಿಟ್ಟ (ಕೊಳ್ಳೆ ಹೊಡೆದ!) ಹಿರಮ್ ಬಿಂಗಮ್, ನಾಸ್ಕಾ ಗೆರೆಗಳು, ಅದರ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಗಾಗಿ ದುಡಿದ ಮರಿಯಾ ರೇಕಿ ಎನ್ನುವ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿ, ಕುಸ್ಕೋ, ಲಿಮಾ, ಅರಿಕೀಪಾ ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಕಣ್ಣ ಮುಂದೆ ಹಾಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಎಲ್ಲೋ ಕಳೆದು ಹೋಗಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎನ್ನಿಸುವುದು ಸುಳ್ಳಲ್ಲ.
ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಆದಿವಾಸಿ ಗುಂಪುಗಳ, ಜನರ ನಿಷ್ಕಲ್ಮಶ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ, ಸರಳತೆಯ ಪರಿಚಯವಿದೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ. ಭಾರತದಂತೆಯೇ ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ, ಇಂಕಾ ನಾಗರೀಕತೆಯ ತೊಟ್ಟಿಲಾದ ಈ ಪೆರುವಿನ ಜನ, ಅಮೆರಿಕಾದವರಂತೆ ದುಡ್ಡು ಮಾಡುವ ಗೋಜಿಗೆ ಹೋದವರಲ್ಲ. ರಾಜಧಾನಿ ಲಿಮಾ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಕೆಲವು ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಟ್ಟಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಪ್ಯಾನಿಷ್ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಾರಾದರೂ ಉಳಿದೆಲ್ಲ ಭಾಗಗಳ ಜನರು ಮಾತನಾಡುವ ಭಾಷೆ ಕೆಚುವಾ. ಲೇಖಕಿ ಭಾಷೆ ಬರದೆ ಪರದಾಡಿದ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನೂ ವಿವರಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಹೇಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಅಲ್ಲಿನವರಿಗೆ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲೇ ವ್ಯವಹರಿಸತೊಡಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮಾಲತಿಯವರ ಅನಕೊಂಡ ಹಾವನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟುವ ಆಸೆ ನೆರವೇರುತ್ತದೆ.
ವೀಸಾಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಪೆರುವಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಬಂದ ಸಂಗತಿ, ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಜನರು ಇವರಿಗೆ ತೋರಿಸಿದ ಆದರ, ಇದೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಓದಿ ನಾನಂತೂ ಪೆರುವಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಲೇಬೇಕೆಂದು ತೀರ್ಮಾನಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಅಪೂರ್ವ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಮನ ಸೋತಿದೆ. ನೀವೂ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಓದುತ್ತಾ ಪೆರುವಿನ ಪ್ರವಾಸ ಮುಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬನ್ನಿ.

Along the banks of the uninterrupted Amazon river in South America is a small country called Peru. Even today, the life of the people there is not well-known to us. There are innumerable travelogues about USA and European countries! But, most people have not even heard about a country called Peru.
This book is an introduction to Peru and the lives of its people. Don’t know why the author Nemichandra wanted to visit Peru, but she used all her savings and left for that country to later on document her trip as the most exciting experience. The whole experience of Peru visit like preparations before going, struggle for Visa, excitement as well as fear of going to an unknown place, all are narrated in detail in this book. Her partner in this adventure, Malathi said “I will come on this trip only if you guarantee me a chance to touch Anaconda.” This is how their preparations took place.
Through the book, individual pictures of Peru are brought in front of the reader. Snake-like Urubamba river, the famous Machu Picchu site and Hiram Bingham, the one who opened it (plundered) to the world, Nazka lines, Maria Reiki the scientist who worked in its defense, Peru’s capital Lima and other places like Cusko, Arequipa, etc., are painted on the canvas of our minds. By the time I finished reading this book, I felt like I was lost in one of the streets of Peru.
This book also talks about Peru’s tribes, their pellucid love for people and simplicity. People of Peru who were brought up in the cradle of Inca civilization, unlike their cousins in North America, do not worry about making lots of money. They are happy and contended with the riches of wide spectrum of their culture. Though people in Lima and other major cities speak Spanish, people in other parts of the country speak and understand only Quechua. Since Nemichandra did not know Spanish and natives did not know English, she managed communication in Kannada (one of the regional languages of Indian subcontinent)! Even Malathi’s dream to touch Anaconda came true!
After reading about their experiences of visiting Peru without Visa and innocent love of its people, I have decided to go on my own trip to Peru. I would say you too should visit Peru once!
